Grannie's Beer Bread

I'd been craving homemade bread last week but couldn't find yeast at the store. I remembered my Grannie's hilarious story about having to buy beer to make her beer bread, and finding it necessary to explain to the cashier and everyone else she came across that it was for making bread, not for drinking. I hit her up for the recipe.
The bread was quick, tasty, and pretty fool-proof. The same can not be said for most bread recipes, right?
Grannie's Beer Bread

3 cups flour (I used 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 1 cup of whole wheat)
(I also added about 1 tbs of ground flax seed)
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
12 oz beer, at room temperature
1/4 - 1/2 cup butter, melted

In a bowl, combine all ingredients except for butter. Mix well, then pour into a greased 9 * 5 loaf pan. Pour melted butter over the top of the bread. (Grannie said she uses less butter because she made it once with 1/2 cup and it ran out of the pan all over the oven floor.) Bake at 375 for 50 minutes- 1 hour. Let cool 15 minutes before turning it out of the pan.

  2. I don't think it matters, Sally. I'm sure Grannie just grabbed something cheap and ran, but I used some leftover beer from Royal B that we were given. It was going flat in the fridge, but it still made good bread! I guess go with whatever you like!
